Department of Homeland Security Announces the Termination of Temporary Protected Status for Nicaragua

On November 6, 2017, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced the termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Nicaragua. The designation will end on January 5, 2019, giving status holders 12 months to make transition plans. The decision was based on a determination that the temporary conditions caused by Hurricane Mitch, which were the basis for the initial designation, no longer exist and there was also no request by the Nicaraguan government to extend the current status.

DHS has not yet made a final decision regarding TPS designation for Honduras. An automatic extension has been granted for six months, through July 5, 2018, while more information is gathered on current country conditions. Please note TPS holders from Nicaragua and Honduras will be required to reapply for Employment Authorization to work legally until the end of their respective extension periods.
